Opioid Overdose Prevention Kits
An opioid overdose or emergency is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. In 2023, Richmond’s rate of fatal overdoses was four times higher than the state of Virginia’s. While there has not been a fatal opioid overdose on campus, being prepared for one can save a life. We aim to educate students, staff, and faculty to keep it that way. All overdoses are accidental, and it is important to know how to respond in that event.
Every opioid overdose is preventable through the use of naloxone, commonly known by its brand name Narcan. Naloxone (Narcan) is an opioid antagonist that immediately reverses the effects of an opioid overdose by blocking the brain’s opioid receptors. In partnership with the Department of Health Studies, Emergency Management, Maintenance Services, Residence Life & Housing, and URPD, Spiders Support Recovery is making naloxone more accessible for our campus community members to prevent fatal opioid overdoses and reduce opioid-related harm.
Narcan is available for emergency use in on-campus opioid emergency kits. Kits located in residence halls can be found in the lower-level laundry room. Outdoor kits are noted in bold. 32 kits are currently available at the following locations:
